In Zara's own words, why she believes "doing the work" is the most important work we undertake:
I believe that we each hold the answers to our own healing and by doing this work in ourselves and personal relationships, we are ultimately doing this work for the whole world. I have witnessed first hand that changing how we communicate can impact the outcome of an exchange even more the what we say.
I have been studying the intricacies of communication and conflict since the fall of 2008. I have a Bachelors in Communication, experience in social work and three certifications in conflict resolutions, group facilitation and mediation. I’ve practiced a variety of communication methods in my own relationships, social circles and professionally with my team as a manager and with my clients as a business owner.
In 2010 I developed my unique method of parts work which I call “Identity Work”. I approach the self as a multiple being, with individuated parts that may be working together, but are often working directly against each other. Many parts are fleeting, as fluid as emotions, but some are quite solid and can take over as the primary self for days, or even years. I apply the methods I learned in group facilitation workshops and mediation when working with parts. I assume each part has a sense of self or an “identity”, and that they believe their role in the system is ultimately good and supportive of the self. From there, I begin a dialogue with a part and among parts to develop understanding, awareness, and ultimately come to agreements about how to best move forward so they may better support the whole self.
As a multi-disciplinary artist, I’ve employed creative practices when working with my parts. Including artwork, creative writing, and performances where I embody the identity and their preferred movements, tone, etc. and move around a space, from chair to chair performing each identity in the current conflict, and acting as a mediator for “myselves”.
Along with individual parts work, I also work with folks in conflict, as a pair or in groups, to help everyone express their perspective, understand each other, and ultimately create agreements to practice moving forward. I specialize in endings, breakups, or major transitions that feel like an ending or a break up.
I have created this website as a network of all my skills in conflict, communication, and creativity. In my life they are intertwined. They overlap in the complexity of my problems, and they especially overlap in creating understanding and solutions to those problems. I hope to share my methods with others, as a guide, coach, and facilitator to offer new tools to the pains of living. Tools that for me have carried as much delight and joy as grief and discomfort.
